A refugees' idea to restore a degraded Ugandan lake pays off - Lake Nakivale located in Isingiro district, serves refugees in Nakivale and Ugandan nationals in areas next to the lake. The lake has been under threat due to massive pollution from silting following massive deforestation during the setting up of the refugee camp and cultivation on top of excess and illegal fishing has made the situation worse. Now, refugees in Nakivale have taken the lead role in the conservation and protection of the lake.

Prevalence of Depressive Disorders and Associated Demographic Factors Among Refugees Amidst COVID-19 in Nakivale Refugee Camp in Southwestern Uganda - NB: This article is a preprint and has not been peer-reviewed. It reports new medical research that has yet to be evaluated and so should not be used to guide clinical practice.
Use of Remote Participatory Video Amidst Corona virus Pandemic: Experiences from Uganda’s Rhino Camp Refugee Settlement - three community produced participatory videos (Uganda, Germany, Turkey) were conducted on a remote basis with the use of mobile technology to understand the impact of the virus on lives of different refugee communities in distant locations around the world. This study evaluates the potential of using the emerging practice of remote participatory video at times of crisis by presenting a case study on one of the participatory video works undertaken in Rhino Camp. Focusing on the analysis of the video messages from the refugees of Rhino Camp, the study explores the following question: What significance and potential could the use of remote practice of civil society produced participatory video have during the COVID-19 outbreak?
Improving the mental health of young refugees in Uganda through sport - A consortium of five organisations plus ORF is co-creating a curriculum that will be delivered to young people in six refugee settlements across the country, as well as in the slums of Uganda’s capital Kampala.
The place of social work in improving access to health services among refugees: A case study of Nakivale settlement, Uganda (paid for content) - This article examines the communication, institutional and socio-cultural challenges to access and use of health services among refugee women and children and conceptualises the social work position in tackling such issues. The findings indicate complex experiences of refuge and ongoing gendered oppression and vulnerability and proposes a rights-based social work approach to addressing impediments at micro, meso and macro levels
A systematic review of socio-ecological factors contributing to risk and protection of the mental health of refugee children and adolescents (paid for content) - Forcibly displaced children are particularly vulnerable for developing mental health problems. Addressing the security needs of adolescent girls in protracted crises: Inclusive, responsive, and effective? (paid for content) - Drawing from field research conducted in four crisis contexts including Uganda, this article explores the experiences of insecurity that adolescent girls face in crisis contexts, and the extent to which responses to their needs are inclusive, responsive, and effective. The article argues that marginalizing adolescent girls in the development and implementation of programs compromises the ability for such programs to be responsive to their needs and misses the opportunity to employ their skills, knowledge, and strengths to build resilience and security within their communities.
