Uganda Refugee News - June 2020

Updated: Jun 10, 2022

Welcome to Edition 6

As the world continues to battles COVID-19, more than ever before, home has come to represent sanctuary for most of us, bringing into sharp focus the insecurity, fragility and challenging situation the displaced are facing. Unfortunately the pandemic has not prevented many from being forced to leave their homes and seek refuge in other countries, hard enough at the best of times but extremely difficult now when even Uganda, whose open door policy is well known, closed its doors.

The need for support and assistance has, if anything, increased and thankfully many of you have stayed put and continued to provide that assistance, in spite of extremely challenging conditions, so THANK YOU for all your ongoing work. As we all continue to find our way in these new times, please keep well, keep safe and as importantly please keep going!

Featured country: Democratic Republic of Congo

Uganda is currently hosting 415,098 Congolese refugees - many of which arrived in the last 2-3 years. The good news that the Ebola crisis has been declared over is contradicted by the worrying news that violence has again erupted in eastern DRC. This is already having an impact on the numbers of asylum seekers trying to enter Uganda something that will likely increase as the closed border restrictions are relaxed. As such, the situation in eastern DRC has been chosen as the feature this month.
