Welcome to Edition 3

I know that things are difficult for everyone at the moment and no doubt for some work has slowed whereas for others work has and will increase exponentially. The good news is that, despite the difficult times, this newsletter can continue! This month, I have made a conscious decision not to include any coronavirus related information, for two reasons, firstly there is so much it would be overwhelming and secondly because you are probably inundated with this information already and the idea of this newsletter is to identify and share research and information you may not be easily coming across. Submissions are extremely welcome – please send to Ugandrefugeenews@gmail.com and wherever possible, they will be included in the next version. To sign up - please click here

  • Access to Functional Handwashing Facilities and Associated Factors among South Sudanese Refugees in Rhino Camp Settlement, Northwestern Uganda - There is limited information about access to functional handwashing facilities in settlements and associated factors. This study found that access to functional handwashing facilities among the refugee households was low and highlights the need for more and continued handwashing promotional programs, especially among newly arrived refugees in the camp. https://www.hindawi.com/journals/jeph/2020/3089063/

  • Factors associated with adherence to safe water chain practices among refugees in Pagirinya refugee settlement, Uganda - Little is known about the level of adherence to safe water chain and associated factors, especially in emergency settings. This study found that there is a need for awareness campaigns on safe water chain maintenance among refugees without any formal education. Constructing more water sources would also minimize round travel time during water collection and enable households to collect sufficient water that enables hygienic water storage and use. https://iwaponline.com/jwh/article/doi/10.2166/wh.2020.230/73223/Factors-associated-with-adherence-to-safe-water

Gender and displacement: South Sudanese refugees in northern Uganda

This new report from Saferworld looks at how displacement caused by violent conflict has affected the gender roles of South Sudanese refugees in Adjumani in northern Uganda. It documents how the roles of refugee and host community men and women have changed and the impact this has had on their decision-making power at home and in the community where they live, as well as on local conflict dynamics. It analyses this in the context of access to land and other livelihood opportunities, and considers related conflicts and conflict resolution processes both within and between refugee and host communities. In light of this analysis, the report assesses the implications for conflict- and gender-sensitive refugee programming. https://www.saferworld.org.uk/downloads/gender-and-displacement.pdf (Disclaimer: the editor of this newsletter was involved in this report
